As part of the journey into a human hair wig or synthetic wig at Bloomsbury of London, we offer full advice on how to look after your hair piece – however, before embarking, we are often asked – “is it easier to look after a human hair wig or a synthetic wig?

Both fibres will need to be washed every so often to keep the hair piece looking fresh and clean. The procedure to wash both materials is the same, however a human hair wig will need washing more often than a synthetic wig, because the hair will get ‘greasy’ quicker. If you are looking for a hair piece that requires less washing, a synthetic wig would be recommended – as this will need washing approximately every 12 wears, whereas a human hair wig should be washed after approximately 7 wears (of course this varies depending on your lifestyle for example, people who take part in sports will need to wash it more often).

The benefit of having to wash a human hair wig more often than a synthetic wig is that it can be restyled more often – which is the exciting part of how to look after your piece. Human hair can be treated with heat styling tools such as hair straighteners and curling irons, so the wearer has the opportunity to experiment with the hair, while synthetic fibres retain their original shape and can’t really be re-styled (though there are some synthetic wigs which are more adaptable than others, for instance synthetic wigs with “moveable partings”).

The other major way to look after your hair piece is in the cut. A human hair wig should be cut by a skilled wig technician every few months, as naturally the ends will break and the hair piece could eventually look dull – this rarely happens with synthetic wigs, making them easier to look after in this sense, and sometimes cheaper too.

Both synthetic wigs and human hair wigs are bountiful in their benefits, so, for more information on which material is best for you, call us today on 020 7404 6040, and book a consultation.
