Will Using Silicon Treatment on My Hair Improve it's Condition?

Silicon treatment involves a deep conditioning procedure which, as the name suggests, contains a large dosage of the material silicon.

Silicon treatment has been favoured for wigs and hair pieces as what often goes unnoticed is that processed hair already uses a silicon coating in its journey from the shelf to the head. Hair pieces that have already been treated to make them more aesthetically pleasing use silicon to add to the shiny, sleek finish of the strands, however, over time, this coating naturally comes off via washing and styling.

While silicon treatment isn't advised for natural hair, it can be recommended for those using a wig or a hair piece. It has been known to protect the hair shaft while offering a solution to untimely frizz and strays. However, the way in which this is done is by creating a barrier at each hair, protecting the strands from the harmful strain of heat styling tools but also resisting any moisture entering the strands – something which naturally should occur to revive the hair.

While the silicon treatment does stop hair from being 'fly-away' and difficult to maintain, over-exposing the wig to such processes are easy to spot on natural, growing hair. However, on wigs, as the hair isn't 'alive', the effects aren't so dramatic.

The major disadvantage of the silicon treatment on natural hair is that eventually the hair has been suffocated for so long it becomes dull and brittle, which is a caution for those wearing hair pieces as the hair doesn't receive the natural oils usually deposited by the scalp anyway, so there really is no protection against such damage.

The conclusion of such a process is, while the treatment does offer temporary revitalisation to a wig or hair piece, like anything, it is all about moderation. Over treating the hair using such products can cause more harm than good, but as a one off you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
