What are the Differences Between Human Hair Wigs and Synthetic Wigs?
There are two options when it comes to purchasing your hair piece – will you chose a synthetic wig or a human hair wig? While both have their advantages and disadvantages, it is vital to know the differences between the two to make an informed decision.
A human hair wig can use hair from Europe or Asia – the human hair wigs at Bloomsbury of London have all been ethically sourced, meaning not only is it possible to track the donor of the hair but also that we are not contributing to the vast amount of exploitation happening in the hair industry.
Human hair wigs have a bounty of advantages as well as a few disadvantages. Firstly and probably most obviously, one of the main differences between human and synthetic wigs is that human hair appears totally natural, and can be treated with heat styling tools like hair dryers, straighteners and curling tongs.
Another difference is that human hair wigs are more flexible and durable than synthetic fibres – this is because the hair has previously not been damaged by being subject to any chemical treatments (i.e. colouring or styling) – so you are able to wear the hair in up dos and down. However, one of the main disadvantages of human hair is that it is notably more expensive than synthetic hair wigs.
Human hair wigs also require much closer maintenance than synthetic hair wigs. This works as an advantage for synthetic hair wigs, as they are extremely easy to look after. Synthetic hair retains its original style easily, so to wash the hair piece is a much less timely procedure. To wash a synthetic hair wig, you must just use specialised wig shampoo and conditioner before leaving the wig to stand until it is dry, which is when it will return to its initial state.
Another advantage of synthetic hair is that it is available in a much larger variety of colours. As the hair has been previously treated with colourants and chemical straighteners / perms (one of the main differences between man-made and synthetic fibres), you are able to find your desired style much easier than with human hair – and it is easier to make synthetic wigs to order as they can be chemically treated.
One of the main disadvantages of synthetic wigs is that they aren't natural – a large difference to human fibres, so don't have as long a life as human hair wigs. Man made fibres, while revolutionising all the time, can't last forever – it has been known in some cases that the hair colour fades and becomes washed out – a problem that doesn't usually affect human hair wigs.
